In her free time enjoys scuba diving, biking, hiking and drawing. Currently, she works for California State Parks Natural Resources Agency and hopes to enter a PhD program in a couple of years. Her interests include marine ecology, marine invasive species, parasite and disease ecology, and ornithology. At StanfordUniversity she worked and studied at Hopkins Marine Station in MontereyBay for three years, had the opportunity to conduct research on Palmyra Atoll for a variety of different projects, and worked as a Teaching Assistant for the class in 2013. At the age of 12, when she was living in Brazil, she got scuba certified and found her passion. She was born in Monterrey, México and grew up moving around different countries. Ana Sofia GuerraĪna Sofia Guerra graduated from StanfordUniversity with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology (Ecology and Evolution) in 2013. Their projects focused on the effect of human impact and overfishing on the abundance and behavior of herbivorous fish, and the effect of overfishing on the abundance of corallivore fish and coral disease. Seamans, the class sailed from O’ahu to Palmyra Atoll, a remote and mostly pristine coral atoll, and Fanning and kiribati, two populated remote islands that form part of the Republic of Kiribati. Fortunately, some corners of the Earth still offer the unique opportunity of studying untouched reegs. It is difficult to understand how degraded coral reefs are when we have nothing to compare them to. Charina is currently the chair of the American Camp Association Camp Training Day for the San Diego region. She currently oversees a wide variety of public education programs including summer camp, field activities, whale watching and visitor interactions. Her love for ocean science and inspiring youth led her to her position as Public Programs Coordinator at Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD. Kristin is currently earning her MS degree in Free-Choice Learning, from Oregon State University, and serves on the board of the National Marine Educators Association.Ĭharina Layman has been an informal educator for over 16 years.
